“Kanaky” – administratively called New Caledonia – was colonized starting in the mid-19th century by France, which notably installed a penal colony before setting its hand to all the riches contained underneath its soil and carrying out a policy that fostered the cultural genocide of local populations. In the memory of the Kanak people, who resisted domination, the period of insurrections led by Chief Atai in 1878 and Chief Noël in 1918 was not so long ago. It was during the latter revolt that Jean-Marie Tjibaou’s grandmother was killed. Born in 1936, Tjibaou studied philosophy and theology, then, in Paris, ethnology, before returning to Kanaky for good in 1972. Two years later, he created and directed the Mélanésia 2000 festival, which sought to promote intercultural dialogue and give a forum for authentic presentations of Kanak culture. Confronted with the incomprehension of radical Kanak groups and the racism of the French administration, Mélanésia 2000 was nevertheless a political and cultural success. During the festival, Tjibaou made a speech that lifted him to the status of a political leader of the very highest order.
In the years to follow, this visionary and charismatic man experienced a meteoric rise up to the leadership of the Front de libération national kanak et socialiste (FLNKS), founded in 1984. When negotiating the evolution of this territory’s status with the French authorities, he defended...
