Colette Magny remains a landmark political singer. A former typist and secretary, she got into music during the “yé-yé” period, and first saw success on the stages of the Contrescarpe or the Olympia with the likes of Johnny Hallyday and Sylvie Vartan. Her voice and her repertoire rapidly took up the causes of the century: she did her own version of Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit , denouncing the lynching of African-Americans in the United States, then she threw herself body and soul into the workers’ movement. In “La Pieuvre”, which appears on the album Magny 68,which appeared in 1968, Colette Magny uses her unique voice to recite a text denouncing working conditions in the textile industry, particularly at the Rhodiaceta factory. This song formed part of the soundtrack for the film Rhodia 4x8 (1969), directed by activist filmmakers from one of the Medvedkine groups, on the living conditions of workers from this factory. On its sleeve, we see a calendar of the 4-8 team, reflecting the working hours of the factories that were in operation 24/7. In this song, she distances herself from...
