about

Her voice and her repertoire rapidly took up the causes of the century: she did her own version of Billie Holiday’s Strange Fruit , denouncing the lynching of African-Americans in the United States, then she threw herself body and soul into the workers’ movement. Published by Chant du Monde, the record label created by French Communist Party, she took part in all the workers’ rallies and sang for the strikers at Pennaroya or Rhodia. In “La Pieuvre”, which appears on the album Magny 68,which appeared in 1968, Colette Magny uses her unique voice to recite a text denouncing working conditions in the textile industry, particularly at the Rhodiaceta factory. This song formed part of the soundtrack for the film Rhodia 4x8 (1969), directed by activist filmmakers from one of the Medvedkine groups, on the living conditions of workers from this factory. On its sleeve, we see a calendar of the 4-8 team, reflecting the working hours of the factories that were in operation 24/7. In this song, she distances herself from...
