about

An award-winning journalist and writer in the 1960s, then head of an African music program at UNESCO, Francis Bebey truly launched his own career as a musical artist during the 1970s. A storyteller, poet, and musician, this Cameroonian artist then performed all over the world. A prolific and unique songwriter, Bebey earned his place in the pantheon of African song. While his musical arrangements based on traditional African instruments inspired many artists, including on the electro scene, his repertoire abounds with lyrics full of humanity, humor, and finesse. Bebey was a bold singer, who gave himself permission to break the rules, exploring new musical arenas.
In this song, Bebey outlines another form of exploration, that of tourism. This activity, which developed along with democratization of transportation and the appearance of a Western middle class, often provoked a certain malaise by reproducing colonial patterns and relationships. The inclusion of African countries in the Western touristic itinerary too often reinforced stereotypes and inequality due to the gap in purchasing power between tourists and locals. Tourist dollars did not always flow in as expected, and they also reinforced forms of local and macroeconomic dependence. Neo-liberal policies led...
